African History

Early History
Many scientist believe that man first appeared in Africa about 17 million years ago and from there migrated to the far ends of the Earth. Time saw the rise and fall of great civilizations in Egypt, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Carthage and other regions of the continent. Rich cultures flourished and trade was carried through out many parts of the known world. With the advent of European and Moslem exploration, imperialism, conquest, colonization and enslavement much was lost. It was not until recent times that Africa again became independent but now must deal with arbitrary national boundaries, racism, ethnic wars, genocide, starvation, civil war and political unrest.
Colonial
After centuries of virtual isolation and independence, Africa became one of the targets for European exploitation. They came for slaves, riches, conversion and a combination of all three. After exploring and conquering the continent they divided its people and natural resources between themselves. Often their rule was brutal and arbitrary. The late 20th century brought independent leaving a region in confusion and turmoil.
