Want To Score More Points With Basketball Plays? Use These 10 Tips.

You don’t need to tell us that you’re looking for ways to score more points. Everyone wants to score more, right?

Well, set plays are a great way to get your team scoring more. But before you jump in, follow these basketball coaching tips to increase your chances of success.

Tip #1: Stress Your Team’s Execution

Set plays work great because you can practice them beforehand. But they’re only going to pay off if you make sure your team is focusing on the execution. Sloppy set plays during practice won’t pay off during game time.

Make sure your players are doing things like setting solid screens, setting their man up before the screen, cutting quickly to the basket, and so on.

Tip #2: Design Your Plays To Flow Into the Offense

You should try to make sure that your plays end up in the same formation as your primary offense. This allows your team to immediately flow into the motion offense, preventing the defense from recovering and reducing turnovers.

Tip #3: Focus on Timing

Timing is everything in a game. If your screener leaves too early, then your shooter’s going to be open before the ball gets to them. Which means that by the time the ball gets there, the defense has gotten up to speed and your open shot is gone.

Getting your team’s timing down is tricky, but it can be done. To do this, you need lots of repetitions.

Tip #4: Make Sure Your Players Know Their Roles

Players that don’t fully understand their roles consistently find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time and this loses games.

Make sure your players fully understand their role. This gets them to take ownership and feel more involved with the team. And, you’ll get better plays as a result.

Tip #5: Stress Concentration

Set plays work. But they only work if they’re practiced beforehand. This means that your players shouldn’t loaf their way through the play when it’s not a real game.

Make a real effort to stress concentration when your players are practicing set plays. Plays should be run just as if it was a real game.

Tip #6: Run Your Plays For the Right People

As coach, you know your players. You know what they’re best at, where they like to run, and where they like to shoot.

Structure your plays so they fit your players’ natural strengths. Your games will be better.

Tip #7: Maintain Good Spacing

Teams that have their players bunched together lose games. Why? Because there’s less ground for the defense to cover!

If you want to score more points, make sure your players are spread out. Your team will have more scoring chances and they’ll be less likely to get trapped by the defense.

Tip #8: Put Your Players In the Best Position to Get the Rebound

You’ve probably got players that are really great rebounders. Well, where do you have them positioned when a first shot is taken?

Make sure your best rebounders are positioned so they can take advantage of a rebound opportunity if the shot is missed.

Tip #9: Use Verbal and Visual Cues

Games are noisy, which means communicating verbally on the court isn’t always possible.

Make sure your team is set up with visual cues to communicate as well as verbal ones. This will ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Tip #10: Make Sure Your Team Reacts to the Defense

It can be easy for a team to run through plays mechanically. But if they don’t know how to read the basketball defense, it’s just as easy for the play to fall apart.

Teach your team how to read the defense, and give them strategies to react. This tip especially comes in handy later in the season and during playoffs.
