Basketball Training Tips

The One Tactic That Can Dramatically Reduce Your Turnovers and Improve Passing

Every team struggles with turnovers and passing errors.  It’s just part of the game, right?

Well, it doesn’t have to be.  I discovered this little known secret after listening to Bo Ryan, arguably one of the best college coaches in basketball.  This technique is his idea, so credit goes to him for coming up with it.

Here’s what I’m talking about…do any of your players cut to the basket right after they get the ball?  You know just as well as me what happens.  Like as not, the ball goes flying out of bounds.

Mess-ups like these are frustrating, and most coaches think they’re just part of basketball, a necessary evil.  But this one technique can help eliminate them, if you take the time to drill this technique into your team during practice.

How To Improve Passing…

First, you’ve got to establish some rules with your team.

Rule #1: If one of your players want the ball, they must give a hand target. If they decide to change direction, then drop they have to drop their first hand target and give a new one.

Rule #2: If you don’t give a hand target, you don’t get the ball. End of story.

Two simple rules.  That’s all you need to get started.

Plus, using hand targets is a great way to start using non-verbal cues with your team.  And if your team practices these rules, over time you’ll find that they’re making fewer turnovers and better passes.

5 More Passing Tips…

1.  Your team’s hand targets should always be held away from their body.

2.  When you use a pass fake, make sure it’s believable.

3.  Always use two hands when catching the basketball.

4.  Always pass away from the basketball defense.

5.  When you catch the basketball in the front court, chin the ball and get in triple threat position.
