Tips
Students will spend a great deal of time and energy cheating. They don't realize this energy could have been used for more productive means.
Watch for roaming eyes.
Most students will look at you before they cheat. They are checking to see if you are watching.
Turn the test face down when you pass them out and make sure that all the students start at the same time. If you don't follow this procedure they will be tempted to share information while you are distracted.
Have the desk clear of all objects except for the test and a pen or pencil.
Check the desk after each test. Some students have been known to leave answers written on the desk for the next class.
Watch out for calculators on desks. Many calculators have memory banks in which answers can be stored. I once caught a student using a calculator for a Geography test. He had the states and the capitals in the memory.
Be aware of students who look in their laps during a test. They will either have a cheat sheet on their laps or  answers written on their thighs.
Be aware of students who look at their hands during a test. They will often write the answers on their palms and arms.
Never allow students to talk during a test.
Watch for a pattern of grades from one class to another. If one of your classes has a pattern of high grades than the rest of  your classes, there is a good chance that answers are being exchanged during lunch, a break or another class.
Keep desks apart to avoid temptation.
Never leave your answer keys on your desk. Students can quickly pick them up or memorize the answers.
Don't give the same test to every class. Scramble the questions from one class to the next.
Don't allow Blackberries, recorders, cell phones or any other electronic device. There is an epidemic in text messaging and image transmission of answers, questions and whole test pages.
Keep the students in the class during the test. Often students will hide answers and review them in the bathroom or hall.
Don't leave the room during the test for any reason. This is an open invitation for the sharing of answers.
Don't have a substitute give a test. Most subs are not trained or certified. They don't have the knowledge required to answer student questions. The students will feel that the test is not important, since you are not there to administer it.
In homework assignments and essay tests check for plagiarism and stolen work. Students will often copy others work or cut and past information from the internet. If what they are writing does not match their level, handwriting, or if you feel you have read it before, rest assured that it is not their work.
Make the punishment for cheating severe enough so the students will not be tempted to try it again. If you don't punishment them properly they will continue this behavior.
