Kept by ourselves in silence and apart;

Day"Memorial Day is a United States public holiday that takes place on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who died in military service for their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. A Brief HistoryMemorial Day was once called Decoration Day and Poppy Day. It is today a time when we will honor those men and women who have given their lives for their country from all wars. People will place flowers and small flags on military graves. The President will lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Miniature ships with flowers will be set adrift in ports. Parades will be held and organizations will pause to honor the military dead. It was started, like so many American holidays, after the devastation of the Civil War. More Americans died in that war than in any other war. Few were not touched by the events and people in both the North and South began placing poppies and other flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers. Realizing the reaction of the public, General John Logan on May 5, 1868 in his General Order No. 11 officially proclaimed May 5, 1868 to be the holiday for decorating and honoring Union graves. The South reacted and established Confederate Memorial Days on: April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi; May 30 in Virginia; May 10 in North and South Carolina; second Friday in May in Tennessee; June 3 in Louisiana; January 19 in Texas. In 1882 the Decoration Day finally became known as Memorial Day. However the tradition of two separate holiday days continued until after World War I when both sections realized the losses from that war. As time passed the holiday became more and more popular and Congress declared the last Monday in May to be the official Memorial Day in 1971 |
