The Magna Carta

Middle Ages
AD 500 to 1509.

Period in European history dating from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the start of the Renaissance. It started in the 5th century as Barbarians created new kingdoms in the former western empire. These new kingdoms were based on a feudal system of economics, government and culture which rapidly replaced the Roman systems. The middle ages (Medieval) reached its height in the 11th–13th centuries with the Roman Catholic Church as the predominant spiritual and political power. This led to clashes with royalty that lasted for centuries. It was a  time of powerful Popes, emerging royalty, poor peasants, fortified castles, knights, chivalry, Vikings, cathedrals, plagues, heresy, inquisitions,  crusades, emerging trade, universities and the growth of individual towns .   The Middle Ages declined when the Feudal System failed, the papal schisms weakened the Popes authority, the Great Plagues caused population declines and the population looked for new leadership. Time line

  Early Middle Ages
The collapse of the Roman Empire is usually considered the start of the Middle Ages  Germanic tribes took over the Roman land and turned vast tracts into feudal lands. Roman rule was replace by the rule of the strongest and Europe rapidly decade into the Dark Ages.

Government
Europeans ruled by a system called Feudalism.
Definition: "
Tiered class system of medieval Europe in which land owned by someone of higher status was lived on and worked by someone of lower status in return for loyal service. The monarch was at the top of the pyramid, the peasants at the bottom. Feudalism began on the Continent as far back as the 8th century as a means of ensuring protection for powerful rulers against other powerful rulers. During the Middle Ages, certain provinces or countries recognized other kings as their feudal overlords." Source: Channel 4 History
