Here are some tips I have
learned that could help you along this path.
The Little Ones. Birth
to Kindergarten:

A time when life begins.

Love them unconditionally.

Set boundaries. Borders give
comfort.

Be consistent! Confusion breeds
chaos

Talk often!

Listen often!

Be a parent.

Read to and with them.

Let them read to you.

Provide reading materials.

Limit TV.

The first report card is yours.
Bubble Gum Years: Kindergarten
to Middle School

A time of great excitement
and expectations.

Talk to their teachers.
-
Take them to new places.
-
Encourage them.
-
Make them proud to be in your
family.

Involve them.
-
Help them with a hobby.
-
Show them pet responsibility.
-
Show genuine interest in them.
-
Be a positive roll model.
-
Be honest with them.
-
Love them.
-
Shelter them.
-
Feed them.
-
Cuddle them.
-
Support them.
-
Laugh and play with them.
Those Crazy Years: The Middle
Schoolers

A time of great change and
growth.
-
Be patient, it will be different.
-
Have no expectations, they
don't.

Know their friends and their
families.
-
Know where they are and with
whom.
-
Pray a lot, you and they are
going to need it.

Be home with them.

Monitor their computer use.
-
Have frank open discussions
on everything.

Listen to how it is said more
than what.

Stay involved.
-
Keep them involved.
-
Be aware of drastic changes.
What do I do Now Years: High
School
-
Give them space.
-
Let them give you space.
-
Keep limited boundaries.
-
Allow them to fail.
-
Let them know you will be
there.
-
Let them feel they can be
there for you.

Listen to them for content.
-
Be their friend, confident,
and mentor.

Don't demand college (not
everyone should go).
-
It's their dreams not yours.
-
Its their life not yours.
-
They can be impulsive.
-
They do have homework.
-
You can give homework.
-
Reinforce responsibility.
-
A car is not necessarily what
they need.
-
They are not too old to be
disciplined.
-
Let them know you love them,
and allow them to love you.
