Drug abuse has always
been a problem in our
society. It was dealt
with as myths and
misconceptions. Abusers
were viewed as
morally flawed and
lacking in willpower
and they where often
punished monetarily,
physically, mentally and
legally. Today that view
still has supporters but
as time has passed and
more research has been
made this view is
changing.. Many view it
today as
a medical disorder which
affects the brain and
modifies behavior.
Causes now reflect
sociological, economic
and in some cases
political situations. We
must recognized those
addicted as human and
find ways of prevention
and treatment to keep
them from becoming legal
problems as victims and
patients. Laws must be
enforced, enacted and
reinforced to punish
those who sell and
provide drugs. Doctors
and pharmacist need to
understand the
prescribing potential
effects of their
decisions to over
prescribe. Schools need
to teach the students
about the causes,
effects of drugs and how
to avoid them. Law
enforcement officials
need to find ways of
helping drug abusers to
prevent addiction and
giving them paths for
recovery. Parents need
to be more mindful of
their children's
activities and
relationships. Society
needs to provide greater
resources for
prevention, and recovery
without guilt. or
