According to Wikipedia "Journalism evolved from ancient oral reports and Roman hand-copied news sheets ( Acta Diurna, c. 59 B.C.) to a mass-media industry enabled by the 1440s printing press. Moving from partisan pamphlets to the commercial "penny press" in the 1830s, it expanded through radio, television, and the internet, continuously increasing news speed, accessibility, and professional standards" What I see today is that the forms of journalism are rapidly changing and being used and abused more and more by politicians, the very rich, major corporations and special interest to advance their narrow point of view and agendas. They are creating fake news stories, bias and misleading commentaries misinformation, and AI created imagery. Some openly support political parties and individuals without any thought of what their effects on the general public and institutions. A true professional reporter, commentary, photographer or editor ethically should fact check, review, research and analyze any potential news story for accuracy and bias. Their role is not be an agent of a politician, party, corporation or wealthy individual but as a supplier of information so individuals can make decisions that can and will effect their health and wellbeing.
I see a dangerous movement of fewer and fewer local news organizations and more and more large corporate conglomerates , with ties to those they are reporting. This trend must and should be reversed, so as to provide more independent local news and diversity.
More and more individuals are avoiding true journalism and getting their information from social media, blogs and late night programs. This can and will cause individuals to support causes and individual who only want to enrich themselves, increase their power and influence and thus creating a dangerous world,
What we are seeing has always existed and at one point was called Yellow Journalism. Just because it is historically existed doesn't mean we should accept it today.
Another disturbing development is the increasing government restriction by law, policy or edict on journalist on what they can report, speak to, cover, or meetings to attend. In our country this is in clear violation of the Constitution's First Amendment!
" It’s a journalist’s job to be a witness to history. We’re not there to worry about ourselves. We’re there to try and get as near as we can, in an imperfect world, to the truth and get the truth out. Robert Fisk"
"The nature of journalism is so lost, especially in this age of social media. Which some see as a replacement" David Kennedy
