"For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill.  The eyes of all people are upon us."
John Winthrop

Colonial America
1492-1776

After a period of exploration England rapidly moved to colonize the east coast of North America. Settlers came for a new live, adventure, wealth, religious freedom (not others) while others came as indentured servants, prisoners or slaves. The Native Americans were here first but the colonist had little regard for their claims and pushed aside their interest. They rapidly built farms, towns, villages and eventually cities. Their economic foundation was in agriculture and raw materials. The mercantile system of this period demanded that their sole purpose was to be a source of food and raw materials. They shipped the raw materials to Britain and in return received the finished products. Soon the American colonies and England clashed over its position in the Empire and broke free to established a new nation.
