"It is easier to sail many thousand miles through cold and storm and cannibals, in a government ship, with five hundred men and boys to assist one, than it is to explore the private sea, the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean of one's being alone. It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar." - Henry David Thoreau

Age of Exploration
982AD-1779AD

Definition: Exploration: " Travel to a part of the earth that is relatively unknown to the traveler's culture, historically often motivated by a desire for colonization, conquest, or trade." Source: Answers.com
Following the Crusades Europe's desire for gold and spices drove her inhabitants to find new ways of importation. The traditional method through the Middle East was too expensive so they decided to sail westward. The first explorer were the Vikings, but they were not seeking wealth and  did not maintain the colonies. It was not until Christopher Columbus made his journeys that the Europeans realized the New World's vast potential. There were three reasons for exploration:
1. It's native populations would be a source of cheap labor and religious conversion.
2. The land would supply an ample wealth.
3. The thoughts of glory sparked passion in their lives.
Exploration became the driving force subjugating  three continents, terrifying the inhabitants and hijacking it's wealth.

"The pattern established at the outset has remained to this day, and the Spaniards still do nothing save tear the natives to shreds, murder them and inflict upon them untold misery, suffering and distress, tormenting, harrying and persecuting them mercilessly."" Las Casas
