What is Global Warming?
"The progressive gradual rise of the earth's surface temperature thought to be caused by the
greenhouse effect and responsible for changes in global climate patterns. An increase in the near surface temperature of the Earth. Global warming has occurred in the distant past as the result of natural influences, but the term is most often used to refer to the warming predicted to occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases".

History
Historically and geographically speaking the Earth has always gone through periods of changes in
temperature. Scientist have concluded that the Earth has over its history gone through many changes
ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold. But one can say that global warming is beneficial because it prevents us from enduring the Icehouse Climate in which we would endure extreme cold temperatures.
This is a normal process, however the problem lies in how we humans effect this cycle of Climatic Change.

What Controls the Cycle of Climatic Change?

Four Primary controlling factors: Click on the factor for additional information.
1. The Green House Effect
2. The Earth's Orbit
3. Shifts in the Earth's Plates
4. The Sun's Energy Output
What is The Greenhouse Effect?
Definition: "The process in which green house gases, like carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere, cause thermal radiation emitted by the Earth's surface to be reflected back down, therefore causing the climate to warm. This natural process is enhanced by man's added pollutants and can reach proportions at which a number of animal and plant species can be threatened with extinction, not to mention cause drastic changes
in the Earth's natural weather patterns.
" Source:

Most of the effect is due to water vapor while the remaining is the result of man made carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide. The process
is vital because the Earth's heat would not radiate back into space without these gases. The Earth's average temperature would be about 60 degrees or more colder with out this process. The recent increase in man made carbon dioxide and methane gases has had a dramatic effect on the Greenhouse Effect and now must be controlled.

How do Plate Tectonics Effect Climatic Change?
The Earth's outer shell is primarily made up of giant plates which move at a rate of about 3cm per year. They can effect the climate by changing the land formation, altering ocean circulation and volcanic activity. Plates can cause land levels to rise or fall and temperatures will increase or fall accordingly. Plates can cut off or
open ocean currents and again temperatures will change accordingly. A Volcano can be effected by plate movements. When it erupts it increased Carbon Dioxide and temperatures will increase.

How doe The Sun's Energy Output Effect Climatic Change?
The amount of heat and the sunspot activity can have a great effect on our climate. Increase in energy by the sun
will increase our temperatures while a decrease in energy will have the reverse effect. The effects of sunspots is still under debate but many scientist believe it does have some effect on our climate.

How Much Effect Does Human Activity Have on Global Warming?
Often people question their role in global warming, given the immense environmental factors. But we do affect
the climate, not so much as individuals but as a collective. Billions of people all doing the same negative or
positive behavior can have a dramatic impact on the environment, for example in the United States the average
American drives in one year over 10,000 miles and releases as a group over 5.5 tons of Carbon Monoxide into
the atmosphere. Thinking in a global view imagine how much CO2 is being release from all the cars on the
planet. Working together we can not stop the natural changes that are causing some of the global warming trends but we can
slow down and mitigate the effects we have on the environment.
